Living Without Children: Support for Women Childless by Circumstance and Women Who Are Childfree by Choice
Experiencing Loss
You’ve faced infertility, medical barriers, or life circumstances that closed the door on motherhood. Your grief is real and deserves recognition.
Searching for Meaning
You’re asking, “Who am I now?” or “What does my future look like?” You want to rebuild purpose, identity, and a fulfilling life beyond motherhood.
Feeling Isolated
In a family-centered culture, you may feel unseen or misunderstood. This space connects you with validation, support, and understanding.
Who This Is For
About Alyssa
Alyssa Koch, Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW
I’m Alyssa Koch, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker in private practice. My work centers on women who are childless not by choice and women who are childfree by choice, two experiences that are different, but often misunderstood in similar ways.
I created this focus intentionally. Women without children frequently fall through the cracks in traditional therapy spaces. Grief can be minimized. Freedom can be pathologized. Regret can feel shameful. Confidence can be judged. In our work together, nothing about your reproductive status is assumed, romanticized, or dismissed.
I bring a blend of clinical training, research-informed practice, and deep respect for the complexity of women’s lives. Therapy with me is thoughtful, grounded, and honest with room for both humor and hard conversations.
How I Help & My Therapeutic Approach
I provide therapy and support for women navigating the emotional, relational, and identity impact of being childless not by choice. This work is grounded in compassion, honesty, and respect for the depth of this experience. It is not about fixing you, rushing acceptance, or eliminating grief. It is about helping you live meaningfully alongside what has been lost, at a pace that feels steady and supportive.
Together, we may focus on:
• Naming and honoring the loss of motherhood and the imagined future you once held, including grief that has not been socially recognized
• Processing layered and disenfranchised grief in a space where it can be fully acknowledged
• Reducing self-blame and shame through self-compassion and nervous system–informed care
• Rebuilding identity and meaning beyond narrow cultural definitions of womanhood
• Exploring purpose, legacy, and values in ways that feel authentic to you
• Addressing isolation and relationship strain with family, friends, or partners
• Strengthening emotional flexibility so you can move forward while making room for grief
My approach is thoughtful, trauma-informed, and relational. I draw from grief-informed work, self-compassion–based therapy, meaning-centered and existential perspectives, and acceptance and commitment–informed practices. Therapy becomes a space to gently explore how childlessness has shaped your sense of self and relationships, while reconnecting you to what matters most.
There is room here for sadness, anger, envy, uncertainty, and also for growth, connection, and hope.
